Music Educational Legacy of Charles Everett Gilbert in Jeju: Narrative and Evaluation

이 연구는 한국전 당시 유엔 민간원조사령부의 한 장교로 제주에 부임하여 19개월 동안 한국고아원(Korea Orphans Home)을 중심으로 전쟁의 폐허 속에서 4개의 밴드를 창설하고 직접 교육한 찰스 E. 길버트(Charles E. Gilbert, 1912~1998)에 대한 이야기를 담고 있다. 길버트의 인류애와 희생적 노력은 2016년 제22회째를 맞이한 제주국제관악제와 제11회째를 맞이한 국제관악콩쿠르의 뿌리로 여겨지고 있다. 필자가 길버트의 딸 다이안 아널드(Diane Arnold)를 찾기까지 길버트의 업적과 공헌은 음악전문가들 조차 모르고 있었다. 우리나라에 알려지지 않은 길버트의 교육적 배경과 전문성의 확인을 통하여 제주에서의 업적을 재조명하였고, 그 시사성을 논의하였다.

This study deals with a story of Charles E. Gilbert who came to Jeju, Korea in 1952 as an executive officer of UNCAC. In addition to his main duty, Gilbert devoted himself to a tremendous amount of philanthropic work, sowing seeds of band music and naming Jeju as ‘the Isle of Music’. 61 years after he had left the Jeju isle, Gilbert’s work bore its fruit as “20th Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival, the largest and the most authentic wind ensemble festival and competition in Asia. In this study, Gilbert’s life is reviewed briefly and his educational achievement in Jeju is re-evaluated with broader and professional view.
