통합이론의 음악교육학적 유용성

Educational Usefulness of the Integrated Music Theory

한양대학교 박재성 교수가 새롭게 창안한 〈통합이론〉(Integrated Music Theory) 은 연주자를 위한 서양 음악이론 교수법이다. 〈통합이론〉은 2012년에 최초로 한양대학교에서 강의가 개설되었고 현재까지 1,2학년 필수과목으로 진행되고 있는 교과목이다. 〈통합이론〉이란 음악 전반에 걸친 다양한 음악이론을 융합하여 학습하도록 구성된 연주 전공생들을 위한 교육과정이다. 많은 연주자들은 배운 이론을 자신의 연주에 적용하지 못했고 그리하여 연주와 이론은 늘 별개로 생각되어왔다. 이런 면을 개선하여 연주에 실질적으로 도움이 되는 이론 교육을 시도한 것이 〈통합이론〉이다. 〈통합이론〉은 음악교육학적으로 유용하다고 입증된 많은 이론들을 포함하고 있다. 〈통합이론〉은 포괄적 음악성 (Comprehensive Musicianship)을 발달시킬 수 있는 요소들이 내재되어 있고, 음악의 `심미적 경험(aesthetic experience)`을 강조한다. 그리고 지식의 자연스러운 전이(轉移)를 추구하며 작은 패턴을 중심으로 음악학습을 시작하는 방법을 사용한다. 또한 형태심리학적 접근(Gestalt Psychology)에서 주장하고 있는, 음악을 거시적으로 보는 관점을 수용하며 최첨단 컴퓨터 프로그램과 기자재를 사용하여 화려한 시각적 효과를 창출하므로 학생들의 흥미 유발을 높이고 있다. 그리고 음악교육학에서 다루어지는 다양한 미학적 관점의 장점을 융합하여 효과적인 방법론을 제시하며, 기억전략을 위한 학습까지 소개되어 학생들의 학습에 도움을 주고 있다. 이러한 〈통합이론〉은 수강한 학생들을 대상으로 시행한 설문조사에서도 매우 높은 만족도를 나타냈다. 〈통합이론〉은 연주자들에게 음악이론이 흥미 있고 유용하다는 것을 일깨워 줄 수 있는 새로운 시도이다.

A newly integrated music theory proposed by Jae-Sung Park, a professor at Hanyang University, is a new approach to western music theory education for musicians. This educational approach has been applied to some lectures conducted through Hanyang University`s music program since 2012 and its application has resulted in the creation of a curriculum that unifies various musical theories. The approach is focused on those who major or in music performance. Until now, university student musicians have been lacking sufficient knowledge of how to apply their learned theories to their performance. Therefore, performance and theory have been regarded as two distinct areas of study. The integrated music theory solves such problems and subsequently contributes to an improvement in overall quality of various music performances. The integrated music theory utilizes aspects of a variety of theories that have proved to be useful in post secondary music education. By adopting and adapting these proven theories, the integrated music theory is inherently built to aide in the development of comprehensive musicianship and emphasizes the aesthetic musical experience. The new theory aims for a smooth transition of knowledge through by establishing and narrowing the students’ focus on small musical patterns. In addition, it accepts a macroscopic viewpoint on the music as outlined by the gestalt psychology approach and arouses students` interest by use of technologically advanced computer programs and equipment that enhance the musical experience through visual effects. The theory integrates various aesthetic viewpoints regarded as advantages in music education, suggests effective methodology, and introduces a memory enhancing strategy, resulting in a more efficient and successful transfer of musical knowledge and resulting performance ability in students. The integrated music theory for students was met with a very high level (92%) of satisfaction in a recent survey conducted among students who were beneficiaries of the approach. The theory is a very effective teaching method for musicians and will lead to greater student appreciation for musical theory, as opposed to aversion to it.
