Storytelling in the Music of the African Diaspora: Focused on the Lyrics of Calypso and Reggae Songs

이 논문은 낯선 땅에 이주하여 지난한 삶을 살아온 아프리카인들의 음악이 담고 있는 스토리텔링의 요소들을 칼립소와 레게의 노랫말을 중심으로 고찰한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 아프리카인들의 강제이주와 관련한 디아스포라(diaspora)의 역사적 상황을 살펴보고, 카리브 지역 국가들의 디아스포라 음악을 개괄적으로 소개하였다. 디아스포라의 역사와 더불어 새로운 땅에 이식되어 토착화한 카리브 지역 아프리카인들의 음악은 그 형성과정 자체가 저마다의 풍부한 스토리를 담고 있다. 본론에서는 카리브 지역의 영어권에 속하는 트리니다드와 자메이카의 대표적 음악인 칼립소와 레게에 초점을 맞추어, 그 노랫말을 통해 아프리칸 디아스포라 음악의 배경과 서사 및 소통전략 등의 스토리텔링 요소를 분석하였다. 본고에서 분석 대상으로 삼은 노래들은 각각 전성기에 해당하는 1940-50년대의 칼립소와 1960-70년대의 레게 중에서 대중적 인지도가 높으면서 서사의 구조 및 완성도가 비교적 우수한 것들이다. 그리고 무엇보다도 이 노래들의 노랫말은 아프리카 구전전통의 다양한 스토리텔링 기법을 효과적으로 활용하면서 고통과 저항의 역사, 그리고 궁극의 진정한 해방과 귀향에 대한 복합적인 디아스포라 정서를 담고 있다.

This paper elaborates on the storytelling elements of the music performed by Africans who went through hardships after migrating to a new land. In particular, it focuses on the lyrics of calypso and reggae songs. As part of this research, it first describes the historical background of the African diaspora and briefly explains Caribbean countries diaspora music. When it comes to the history of the diaspora and the music performed by Africans from the Caribbean who came to a new land and was naturalized there, the entire process is full of stories. The paper then analyzes the storytelling elements (e.g.background, narration and communication strategies) found in African diaspora music, concentrating on the lyrics of calypso and reggae which are the representative genres of Trinidad and Jamaica, English-speaking countries in the Caribbean. Among the calypso songs from the 1940 s and 50 s and reggae songs from the 1960 s and 70 s, heydays of the two genres, this paper analyzes those that are widely known and that have relatively strong structures of narration. Above all, the lyrics of these songs express the Africans complex sentiment related to their history of pain and resistance and to their ultimate and true liberation before going back home. A variety of storytelling techniques derived from Africa s oral tradition are efficiently used to express such sentiment.
