독일 민간합창운동의 사회적, 문화적 역할과 오늘

Social and Cultural Roles of the Amateur Choral Movement: On the Occasion of the Two-hundred-year History of the Berlin Liedertafel by Carl Friedrich Zelter

첼터의 “베를린 리더타펠” 창설과 더불어 시작된 독일 민간합창운동은 근대 문화사에 수반된 사조들을 수용했고 또 고유한 사조들을 생성시켰다. 이 노래하는 남성들의 역사에 나타난 두 가지 특징은 은밀한 친교와 통일국가를 향한 힘의 결집이다. 그들에게서 “합창”은 인간을 도덕적으로 고양하고 국민을 교육하는 이상적인 교재였고, 시대적 과제들을 해결하는 최선의 수단이었으며, 나아가 종교적 차원의 숭고한 의미가 부여되는 대상이기도 했다. 그들이 부른 노래들은 보통 “민요”로 명명되었으며, 장르상으로는 예술가곡과 민요의 중간에 위치하는 “민속노래”(volkstümliches Lied)에 속한다. 독일리트의 모체이기도 한 “민요”의 뿌리는 민속과 그리스도교 사상이 융합된 정신문화에 있으며, 민속노래는 간결, 순수, 내면, 남성 등의 개념으로 대표되는 독일 언어미학의 복합체다. 이 같은 민속과 종교의 바탕위에서 꽃피워진 합창운동의 정신은 독일 사회를 지탱하는 근본 사상들 중 하나로 자리 잡았으므로, 합창운동의 쇠퇴와는 무관하게 오늘날까지 유효하다. 이 민간합창운동은 독립 장르로서의 “합창”과 “무반주 4성부남성합창”을 음악세계에 남겼고, 합창이 가질 수 있는 힘들을 역사에 증명했다.

Singing in societal male choirs in Germany, a creation of the 19th century, was followed up by the folk song with its aesthetical music. The men, who tried to cultivate the German national traditions in their society by singing, drew vitality from it. Singing collectively offered the men a personal, political experience for their national mind. The pioneers of the choral movement grew through their own cultural interests: Zelter s elite choir, Nägeli s national education, Silcher s moral refinement and Thibaut s social purity. Lyre and Sword was a collection of poems by Theodor Körner standing as a symbol of the concepts of Peace and War, Song and Country and Art and Life focused on the entire history of the choral movement. The temper of the choral movement, the folklore and the Christian religion are based on establishing itself as a supportive force in society and remaining independent on the decrease of the initial choral movement. Singing together in a choir fascinated these men in their still divided nation because it portrayed the morality and the beauty of nature. For many people this was behaving similarly for the concept of home in a broader sense. The men, who expressed their wishes in songs, reached all these goals: National unity with the name Germany (Deutschland), cheerful companionship and a peaceful home country with its nature. It is hoped, that the German choral movement can contribute with their valuable historical experiences in the future to stabilize the international peace and coexistence.
