The authors evaluated 67 of schizophrenics parents and 44 controls to confirm P3 abnormality which had been noticed in the schizophrenics and whether the abnormality was a trait or a genetic marker. According to negative and positive symptom scores, and based on their family histories of psychiatric disorder, P3 was compared between two groups. The results were as follows ; 1) In the parents of the patients, P3 latency was significantly more delayed than in the controls, and P3 amplitude of Pz was significantly reduced than in the controls. 2) The P3 latency on Pz in the parents of negative schizophrenics was significantly more delayed than that in the parents of positive schizophrenics. 3) The P3 latency on Fz and Cz in parents with a family history was significantly more delayed than in those without a family history. 4) No significant correlation in the P3 latency on Fz was found between schizophrenics and their parents. In conculsion, the results suggested that a delay in P3 latency found among schizophrenics probably could be a genetic marker.
