The author examined T-cell subpopulations, contents of serum immunoglobulins, and hormonal changes in 20 male schizophrenics and 24 male normal healthy persons in order to elucidate the etiology of the schizophrenia in immunological aspect. O ur results were as follows ; 1) Compared with the normal healthy persons, the schizophrenic group had significantly higher IgM level and C D 8+ cell %,and significantly lower 丁 cell %,C D 4+ cell number, C D 4+ cell %, and C D 4+ cell %, and C D 4+/C D 8 + ratio. 2) Compared with the normal healthy persons, the positive schizophrenic group had significantly lower T cell No., T cell %,CD4+ cell No., CD4+ cell % and CD4+/C D 8+ ratio. 3) Compared with the normal healthy persons, the negative schizophrenic group significantly higher C D 8+ cell % and had significantly lower T cell %, C D 4+ cell %, C D 4+/C D 8 + ratio and prolactin level. 4) Compared with the negative schizophrenics, the positive schizophrenic group had significantly lower numbers o f lymphocyte, T cell, C D 4+ cell and C D 8+ cell and had significantly lower CD8+ cell %. 5) C D 8+ cell number and C D 8+ cell % correlated significantly with the positive symptom score in the schizophrenic group. Therefore, immunological function might play some role in the etiology of schizophrenia and it is necessary to extend further research in this area.
