In this preliminary study, the authors ijivestigated the influence of the Korean modem historical events on the psychodynamics of psychiatric patients. The authors attempted to clarify the implication of the Korean modern historical events on the manifestation of psychopathology, and to lay stress on the significance of these events. This study included 64 cases which were presented at the psychodynamic case conference from March 1992 to Februry 1994 at the department of neuropsychiatry, Inchon Christian Hospital. The results were as follows ; 1) Among the the 64 patients, the psychodynamics of 23 cases(35.9%) seem to be more influenced by the Korean modern historical events. 2) Among the variable demographic data, the patients influenced by historical events had the oppotunities of significantly higher educational levels than the ones not influenced. 3) In the patients who were influenced by historical events,there were more females than the ones not influenced, higher socioeconomic state and had more mood disorders. But the statistically significant difference was not observed. 4) As the psychosocial stress, early grandparent loss, unwilling marriage, occupation and socioeconomic problems had more significant influences on the patients influenced by historical events than the ones not influenced. 5) In the patients influenced by historical events, the diagnosis and psychocial stress facotrs were not significantly different among the three critical psychohistorical periods. But more patients were influenced by psychosocial stress due to the major historical events of the phase II, the period of Korean revolution and Korean War.
