Use of Psychotropic and Medical Agents During ECT Course: ECT-Drug Interactions

Except a few well-defined interactions, there is considerable uncertainty about the in teractions between electroconvulsive therapy(ECT) and psychotropic and medical pharmacological agents used during E C T course mainly because the interaction with E C T has not been adequately tested at any stage in drug development. Most of the available knowledge on E CT -drug interactions in h um a n are based o n clinical experience and inferred from animal studies. This article reviews ECT-drug interactions in terms of safety and /or dficacy rather than theoretical issues to be helpful for clinical practitioners. Drugs are divided into three categories : psychotropic and medical pharmacological agents taken by patients prior to initiation of the E C T course and agents given in conjunction with E C T to modify the seizure itself or the effects of the seizure.
