음악과 음향의 해석에 따른 영화 ‘2001: 스페이스 오디세이’의 분석 연구

A Study on an Analysis of the Film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ through the Interpretation of Music and Sound

영화에서의 음악과 음향은 영상의 해석에 많은 영향을 줄 수 있으며, 이중에서도 특히 음악의 해석은 영화의 해석에 많은 영향을 준다. 인간과 기계라는 서로 상반된 세계를 주제로 하는 영화 ‘2001: 스페이스 오디세이’에서 음악사적으로 보아 시대적으로 서로 다른 음악인 조성음악과 무조음악이 서로 대조되는 성격으로 동일한 영화에서 쓰였다는 것은 중요한 사실이다. 이 영화에서 조성음악은 주로 인간을 상징하고 있는데 탄생, 생명, 불멸의 것 등을 상징하며 우주인 및 유인원의 장면 등에 주로 많이 등장한다. 반대로 이 영화에서 무조음악은 혼돈, 미지의 세계, 알 수 없는 공간, 시공간의 초월 등을 상징하는데 대부분의 무조음악이 클러스터 기법으로 작곡된 음악이다. 그러나 음악의 표면적인 성격의 의미처럼 항상 서로 대조적인 의미로서 영화에 조성음악과 무조음악이 쓰인 것은 아니며, 때로는 조성음악과 무조음악이 서로의 의미를 전위하기도 한다. 이러한 음악이 쓰인 장면들에 의하여 등장인물들의 특성이 드러나기도 하지만, 서로 다른 등장인물들의 관계는 영화의 스토리와도 그 관계를 가지며 역할을 한다. 또한 시간적 또는 공간적인 의미에 있어서 영화의 음악과 음향은 그 영화의 해석에 많은 영향을 줄 수 있으며, 특별하게 음향효과 중 엠비언스 사운드는 음악의 연장의 개념으로 해석될 수도 있을 것이다.

Music and sound in film can provide much influence to the analysis of the visual, particularly in the case of music. It is an important fact that in ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, a film that discusses dualism based on mankind and machine, two contrasting music trends of completely different times and forms categorized as tonal and atonal music had been both used in the same piece. In the film, tonal music represents man and is used in the scenes where anthropoids and astronauts appear, to describe the values of birth, life and infinity. On the contrary, a musical portrayal of space and machinery was completed by frequent application of cluster chords in atonal music to symbolize chaos, the unknown world, unidentified space and transcending of time and space. However, it is not in all sequences that these musical contrasts are used, the signification of tonal and atonal music are sometimes replaced by each other. Music not only develops individual characteristics of the main characters in the film, but also establishes relationships among the character themselves throughout the flow of the plot. In addition, in time and spatial aspects, music and sound can give much influence to the interpretation of film, particularly, ambience sound can be analysized in the extension of music. Acknowledging that change of music and sound in film can be of big influence to the analysis of film and an important factor, more studies on film music and sound should be made in the future and such studies should be practically applied to films to be made.
