This study aimed at shedding light on how man can better understand the music. Thus, it was examined how valid Schenkerian theory that is well-known as an tonal music analysis method is for recognizing the music by considering a variety of major cognitive theories from the gestalt perspective. In analyzing and understanding the music, Schenkerian theory is closely related to the main principles of the gestalt theory - proximity, similarity, good continuation, and common fate. And most of principles of the gestalt theory are shown in Schenkerian theory. In addition, Schenkerian theory has been proved as a very effective way for transferring musical memory into LTM(long term memory). Of course, Schenkerian theory has been mainly used for analyzing the tonal music, thus there is a limitation for analyzing a variety of musical eras. Nevertheless, Schenkerian theory is still an effective, efficient and attractive tool for understanding the tonal music based on the functional harmony.
