The purpose of this investigation was to compare the psychological characteristics such as depression, anxiety, personality in patients who had a negative coronary arteriogram with those in patients who had arteriographic evidence o f coronary artery stenosis. Pathients admitted for coronary arteriography to the cardiovascular department of the C honnam University Hospital were assessed, the day before coronary arteriography, psychological characteristics by self-rating scales such as Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety In ventory, Eysencks Personality Questionnaire, Eysencks Type A Personality Questionnaire and were assessed prevalences of panic disorder by semi-structural interview with DSM-III-R criteria for panic disorder. The results of comparing the psychological characteristics in groups with and without significant coronary artery stenosis are as follows ; Patients with chest pain and a negative coronary arteriogram were significantly younger and more likely to be female, endorsed a greater number of autonomic symptoms with chest pain and were more likely to report atypical chest pain than patients with chest pain and a positive coronary arteriogram. These patients had significantly greater prevalences of panic disorder by DSM-III-R criteria and significantly higher scores on BDI, Trait Anxiety than patients with chest pain and a positive coronary arteriogram, but there were no statistically significant differences in State Anxiety, Personality Questionnaire. We recognized that patients with chest pain and a negative coronary arteriogram had much more psychiatric problems than patients with chest pain and a positive coronary arteriogram
