The Change of Serum Magnesium and Calcium in Schizophrenia and Mania

This study was conducted to investigate the effects o f haloperidol and lithium treatment on serum magnesium and calcium level. The author measured the concentrations o f calcium and magnesium in sera o f 50 patients(male 35，female 15) with schizophrenia and 44 patients(male 2 1，female 23) with mania by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectrometer. The results were as follows ； 1) Serum magnesium level o f the schizophrenic patients on discharged6.7 土 3.3m g/l) was significantly lower than that o n admission(18.9 土 4 . 2 m g / l) ( p 〈0.01)，and serum magnesium levels of the schizophrenic patients on admission and discharge were significantly lower than those of the control group(22.0 土 4 .9 m g / l) ( p 〈0.01). 2) Serum calcium level o f the schizophrenic patients on discharge(85.0 土 15.3m g/l) was significantly lower than that on admission(94.6 土 2 2 .0 m g /l)(p〈 0.05) and serum calcium levels of the schizophrenic patients on admission and discharge were significantly lower than those of the control group(22.0 土 ^ &#12293;m g / lX p < 0.05). 3) Serum calcium level o f the manic patients on admission(76.5 土 1 3 .6m g/l) and discharge (81.7 ± 1 4 .7m g /l) were significantly lower than those o f the control group(93.6 土 19.7m g/l) ( p C o .o i) . 4) Serum magnesium level of the first onset schizophrenic patients on admission(22.3 土 2. 2 m g / l) was similar to that o f the control group(22.0 土 4 .9 m g /l)，but the level decreased as the number of recurrence increased(p〈 0.05). 5) Serum magnesium level of the antipsychotic-treated schizophrenic patients with EPS at the time of discharge(14.6 土 2.2m g/l) was significantly lower than that at the time of adm ission 19.8 土 5 .2 m g /l)(p 〈 0.001)，but no difference of serum magnesium level was noted in the schizophrenic patients without EPS during the hospitalization(p < 0.05). 6) Serum calcium level of the antipsychotic-treated schizophrenic patients with EPS at the time of discharge(78.9 土 12.5m g/l) were significantly lower than that at the time o f admission (95.4 土 2 2 .5m g /l)(p < 0.05)，but nodifference of serum calcium level was noted in the schizophrenic patients w ithout E P X during the hospitalization(p〉0.05).
