This study was designed to investigate the Relationship between self-dscrepancies and psychological discomforts in order to explore and validate the applicability and clinical utility of Higgins’s self-discrepancy theory in Korea. Subjects were 220 Chosun University students. All subjects’ different self-concepts were measured by the selves questionnaire modified by authors on the basis of Higgins’ protocol and their different kinds of self-discrepancies were calculated by two raters and their various psychological discomforts were measured by BDI, BAI, SCL-90-R. The results were as follows ; 1) There were significantly positive intercorrelations among the 4 different self-discrepancies. 2) The greater the magnitude of both overall self-discrepancy and negative self concept, the more intensely increased general discomfort. 3) There were significantly positive correlations between Actual-O ught/Own discrepancy and all questionnaires related to discomfort, between Actual- Outght/Other discrepancy and Obsession-Compulsion, Interpersonal sensitivity, Anxiety, Hostility scales, between Actual- Ideal/Own discrepancy and Phobic anxiety scales(only in women), between Actual-Ideal/Other discrepancy and depression, interpersonal sensitivity scales. 4) After grouped according to B D I and BAI scores, Depressed-Anxious, Depressed and Anxious groups respectively showed higher scores of overall self-discrepancy, Actual- Ideal / Own discrepancy and Negative self-concept than Non Depressed-Non Anxious group. Depressed-Anxious and Anxious groups respectively showed higher scores of A ctual-O ught/Ow n, Actual- Ought/Other , and Actual-Ideal/Other discrepancy than N o n Depressed-Non Anxious group. It is tentatively concluded that Self-discrepancy theory is applicable to korean population, but need to be modified somewhat in that different kinds of self-discrepancies individually and gender should be considered in the application to koreans, and that the theory is clincally useflil.
