The Determinants Influencing the Dispositions of Psychiatric Emergency Visitors

In this study the author tries to elucidate any determinants concerning the disposition of visitors in a psychiatric emergency room by analyzing 667 psychiatric patients who had been visited the Chung-Ang University Hospital Emergency R o om from 1991. 6 .1 to 1992. 5. 31. 1) Hospitalization rates were higher in men, rural residents, those making a second visit and in the spring. In addition, these patients had psychotic symptoms, were psychoactive substance users, showing violent behavior, had personality disorders, having femilial problems and were accompanied by a family member. 2) In general, out patient department follow up (O P D F / U ) was the result of the majority of the emergency room visits. The rates of O P D F / U were higher in women, urban residents, visits during summer and autum n and evidenced neurotic symptoms such as somatization, anxiety, depressive symptoms, adjustment difficulties due to transient situational problems and : ital problems. 3) Discharges against medical advice were represented mainly in cases of acute neurotic : ptoms, financial problems, organic mental disorders and visitors who came with friends.
