Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings in Basal Ganglia of Schizophrenia

  • 2

This study was performed to investigate possible neuroanatomical changes in the basal ganglia of schizophrenic patients. We used magnetic resonance imaging morphometric techniques, selected of two axial planes to show obviously basal ganglia, to estimate the area and the volume of specific nuclei of basal ganglia and cerebral hemispheres and further each precentage by the same hemisphere in schizophrenic patients and controls with m ild neurotic complains, who had no significant difference in age- and sex- distributions. Schizophrenic group had greater basal ganglia in all nuclei analysed these differences didn’t attain statistical significance for all. Estimates of the area and each percentage of all nuclei of basal ganglia execept globus pallidus in the lower slice, not the higher slice were increased. Estimates of the volume of putamen, lenticular nucleus, striatum in all nuclei of basal ganglia were increased in the schizophrenic patients. The area increase in all nuclei of basal gangalia except globus pallidus and especially the volume increase in putamen, lenticular nucleus, and striatum are cautiously interpreted as one of the evidences supporting neurodevelopmental hypothesis of the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.
