A Comparative Study on the Korean Translation of the Terms for the Mental Disorders in the Psychiatric Literatures Published in Korea

Authors investigated psychiatric terms in Korean version for the mental disorders to elucidate the discrepancies among the translations of the name of mental disorders by different authors. The object of the investigation was the Korean psychiatric textbooks including translation of the foreign textbook of psychiatry, ICD-10 Chapter Vin Korean version, Korean psychiatric dictionary and some monographs on anthropophobia and panic disorder. It has revealed that about 50 percent of the total items needed m inor or radical revisions. The major principles and the crucial points for the translation of the foreign terminology were suggested The necessity of translators’ cooperation with the experts of linguistics and other social sciences as well as other medical fields were emphasized. An international collaboration among experts in the Chinese character using countries such as China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea are also requested
