Development of the Korean Version of the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test(CAST -K ) : A Reliability and Validity Study

  • 174

One of screening tests used for identifying the children of alcoholics is the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST) developed by Jones(l98 l). Authors translated the original version(30 items) into Korean and performed reliability test for the purpose of the application in Korea. Korean Version of Children of Alcoholics Screening Test(CAST-K) was administered in 36 children of alcoholics(COA group) and 262 elementary, middle and high school adolescents (comparison group). The test-retest reliability, item-total correlation and internal consistency were high in their scores. The test-retest reliability was 0.944. The internal consistency reliability was 0.83. The mean values of CAST-K scores of COA group was significantly higher than that of comparison group(p<C0.00l). However, the differences in means of CAST-K scores according to age or sex were not statistically significant In conclusion, the CAST-K may be a promising tools for identifying the children of alcoholics. A limitation of the current study seems to be the lack of independent verification of parental drinking status and the current study did not address directly the issue of false positives nor the question of false negatives. These parts could be examined as further steps in the validation of CAST-K.
