The Meaning of the Visual Expression Produced by a Psychiatric Patient During the Psychotherapeutic Process

Objects : The authors investigated the meaning of the visual expression produced by a psychiatric patient during the psychotherapeutic process. Methods: The subject was twenty seven year old women diagnosed as atypical psychosis. Twenty nine pictures were collected. For interpretation of the symbols, the method of amplification was applied. Results : 1) The drawing process itself was therapeutic. 2) The unconscious process of the patient was expressed in the symbols. 3) The patient could recognize her inner change in her serial drawings and this recognition encouraged the patient’s motivation in the therapy. Conclusion : These results suggest that drawing process was therapeutic and facilitated the psychotherapeutic process and that the visual expression could be meaningful media in understanding the patient
