Object ： We studied the epidemiological and clinical factors that could influence the prognosis of schizophrenia as basic data for future prospective studies. Method ： The first onset of the forty-one, newly admitted schizophrenics at Wonkwang University Hospital from Mar. 1，1989 to Sep. 1，1991 were contacted and carefully investigated from Dec. 1，1994 and Sep. 30，1995 through the methods of chart reviews, mail questionnaires, and telephone interviews. Results ： The factors that were associated with good prognosis were being female, being of high and middle socioeconomic level, with no parent loss before the age of 20, and late onset of age. There were also side effects during the treatment period and first admissions of antipsychotic medications. The factors that were associated with poor prognosis were being male, being of low socioeconomic level, with parent loss before the age of 20 and early onset of age. There were also side effects during the admission of drugs.
