A Pilot Study on the Correlation between Negative Symptoms and Plasma Serotonin Concentration in Schizophrenic Patients

  • 14

This study was performed to evaluate the correlation between negative symptoms and plasma serotonin concentration in schizophrenic patients. The subjects were 39 schizophrenic patients diagnosed by DSM-IV who were admitted to the Chung-Ang University Hospital from January 1,1995 to Februrary 28, 1995. PANSS was used for evaluating the negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients. The plasma serotonin concentration was measured by HPLC. The results were as follows : 1) There were no statistically significant differences in plasma serotonin concentration between positive syndrome group, negative syndrome group, and non-positive negative group. 2) There were no significant correlations between change in plasma serotonin concentration and change in total scores of positive, negative, composite, general psychopathology scale, and score of each item of negative symptom scale on total patient group. 3) There were no significant correlations between change in plasma serotonin concentration and change in total scores of positive, negative, composite, general psychopathology scale and score of negative symptoms of each item scale on negative syndrome group. In summary, there were no significant correlations between plasma serotonin concentration and negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients. This results did not support that plasma serotonin can be a biological marker of negative symptoms in schizophrenic patients
