The Psychopathology Correlated with Diabetes Mellitus - Deal with Psychiatric Symptoms, Especially Depressive Symptoms -

This study was performed to find out psychopathological characteristics related with diabetes mellitus(DM ) in comparison with known D M patients, newly diagnosed D M patients, normal subjects. These three groups were examined with Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) & Symptom Check Iist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R). The results were as follows ： 1) Known DM patients showed significantly higher scores on B D I, and all subscales o f SCL- 90-R than normal subjects. 2) The B D I score of known DM patients was simillar with newly diagnosed D M patients while known DM patients showed significant differences in comparison with newly diagnosed D M patients on Depression and Obsession subscale in SCL-90-IL 3) The content of depressive symptoms of known DM patients was similar with that of newly diagnosed DM patients. 4) Newly diagnosed DM patients showed higher tendency on B D I score and Interpersonal sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility，Phobic Anxiety subscale score o f SCL-90-R than normal subjects. 5) There were no differences in B D I score and all o f SCL-90-R subscale score according to prevalence of D M except somatization subscale. O ur study suggests that depression may be predisposed to D M and the man who has high interpersonal sensitivity, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety is more susceptible to D M . Futhermore, D M makes worse preivious psychopathology probably. Therefore in the management of D M , it is important to treat them according to the aspects of depression and other psychopathological characteristics.
