A Study on the Music Teacher Education Programs and Teacher Evaluation Process

The main purpose of this study is to examine music teacher education practice of Korea and the process of teacher evaluation process of the subject. Since the beginning of the current government, educational reform was one of the main political issues. Among the issue of the educational reform, evaluation of teacher was one of the most sensible issues. In order to evaluate, one must know what to evaluate and how to evaluate what to evaluate. Thus, in this thesis the researcher has tried to identify the practice of music teacher education practice in Korea and some exemplary programs of the U.S. Based on the identified music teacher education programs, the researcher examined evaluation process of the U.S. in which evaluation is an essential process for promotion. Based on the findings, the writer drew conclusions: one for contents of the evaluation and the other for the ways of evaluation. Finally, the researcher suggested recommendations on the evaluation of music teacher in general: 1) It is prerequisite to identify the characteristics of school music education and prepare music teachers education programs and evaluation procedures according to the characteristics of the school music education; 2) The evaluation of music teachers must be carry out for the specific purpose of the evaluation; and finally 3) Among the criteria of music teacher evaluation, the teaching of music as subject matter area must be emphasized.
