In a word, the 21st century could be defined as the Information based Age. The importance of computer-mediated communication, which conveys overflowing information, is being greater in parallel with its technological advance as one of the leading mandatory instruments in this era. It needs competent human resources who could better respond to the 21st century s sociocultural shifts and the change of teaching method for the students to be sorts of main forces in dynamically changing future society. The purpose of this study was to seek ways for teachers to understand Information and Communication Technology, (ICT), and take advantage of that. And it s additionally meant to suggest an ICT-based music education model to urge students to be more interactive in class and provide higher-quality music education. For that purpose, it s attempted to review literature on ICT, to identify global trend in ICT-assisted education, to present an ICT-based music education model, and finally to devise music instruction by online information retrieval by referring to Korea Education & Research Information Service s ICT-based lesson model. And after three were selected out of eight different instruction types of using ICT, including online information retrieval, homepage production(Namo) and a use of music software, teaching plans was proposed for each of them. The lesson plan by online information retrieval was designed to provide a chance to appreciate Pansori, the song of a drama by the chang performer, as a way to integrate every area including comprehension, singing and appreciation. The one-sided cramming teaching method by teacher was avoided, and that aimed at having students search information over the Internet to stimulate their interest and develop their self-directed learning capabilities so that they could construct knowledge on their own. Another teaching plan by Namo Web editor selected Ravel s Bolero as a topic song to teach students to distinguish the tone colors of different musical instruments. And the third one capitalized on Encore, a music software, to help them compose melodies and a three-part piece of music. The above-mentioned ICT-based education would be able to improve teaching methods and take the quality of instruction to another level. However, such an approach won t always work. As ICT-based education focuses on individual learning activities, it may result in making students closed or isolated from others. The possible side effect shouldn t be overlooked, and how it could be prevented should be studied as well.
