Differentiation of Anxiety and Depression in Developmental Aspect

  • 29

The study was performed to find out how depression and anxiety can be shared and differentiated according to the age and sex in children and adolescents. Eight hundred eighty children and adolescents in 3 different age groups(elementary, middle, high) were assessed using the Korean version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children(STAIC) and Korean version of the Kovacs Children s Depression Inventory(CDI). The results were as follows : 1) The mean scores of STAIC-T(txait) were significantly increased with increasing age(p < 0. 01). Female group had significantly higher scores than the male group in high school(p < 0.01). 2) The mean scores of STAIC-S(state) were significantly increased with increasing age(p < 0. 01). Male group scores were significantly higher than those of female group in middle school(p <0.01). Female group scores were significantly higher than those of male group in high school(p <C 0.05). 3) The mean scores of CDI were significantly increased with increasing age(p <0.01). Female group scores were significantly higher than those of male group(p〈 0.05). 4) Trait anxiety-depression correlation coefficiency(r = 0.61 - 0.63) was higher than State anxiety- depression correlation coefficiency(r = 0.50 - 0.54),Trait anxiety-depression correlation was higher than State anxiety-depression correlation. 5) Multiple regression to depression(R2) was abruptly decreased from 50% to 32% in trait anxiety elucidating depression and from 55% to 43% in state anxiety elucidating depression. From the above results, the anthors suggest that anxiety-depression was markedly differentiated according at the age of high school students in female group.
