The Effect of Brief Token Economy Treatment in Psychiatric Inpatients

The authors applied token economy treatment to psychiatric inpatients who had maladaptive behavior in order to investigate the effect of token economy as an adjunct to drug or psychosocial treatment. The results were as follows ； 1) The achievement rate of target behaviors which indicates the rate of success of behavioral modification was 43.8%, 12 cases out of a total of 32 cases. 2) In the achievement group, the distributions of diagnosis were schizophrenia, 5 cases among 16 cases ； delusional disorder, 1 case among 2 cases ； mental retardation 1 ； organic mental disorder 1 case. 3) The characteristics of the achievement group were young age, male sex, 1st admission and longer treatment period.
