Quantitative EEG in Patients with Traumatic Head Injury : A Comparison with MRI and SPECT

The authors investigated the clinical usefulness of QEEG in assessing the brain function of the patients with traum atic head injury. We examined the QEEG in 14 patients who had shown neuropsychiatric symtoms following traumatic head injury and com pared the abnorm alities of QEEG with those of MRI and SPECT. The increased alpha power in frontal lobe or temporal lobe and the decreased interhemispheric coherennce of slow waves(theta and delta wave) in frontal lobe are the characteristic findings of QEEG in patients with traumatic head injury. In com parisons of MRI, SPECT and QEEG, the QEEG and SPECT were more sensitive tools than MRI in detecting brain lesions. It is possible to localize the brain lesions by functional modalities such as SPECT and QEEG in the patients with traum atic head injury who didn’t show the anatomical abnormalities in MRI. Judging from the fact that some patients had shown com m on features in QEEG, we might conclude that the use of QEEG is very helpful in assessing the brain functions of patients with traumatic head injury.
