Objects : This study was undertaken to know whether there is any clinical efficacy o f glycine as adjuvant to antipsychotics in chronic schizophrenics. Methods : Twenty two chronic schizophrenic patients, to whom the same antipsychotics as usual were administered, were random ly assigned to two groups ; to the experimental group, glycine was and to the controlled group, placebo was administered adjuntively for 12 weeks in double blind design. We assessed psychopathology by BPRS and measured plasm a concentration of glycine, serine, taurine, by H PLC every 4 weeks. Results : 1) The experimental group showed no significant psychopathological improvement, comparing with the controlled group (Table 2-a). 2) The concentration of glycine in the experimental group was significantly increased than the controlled group (Table 3-a). 3) Specific side effects o f glycine were not found. Conclusions * Based on these results, glycine adjuvant therapy to chronic schizophrenics is thought to be little effect on improvement of schizophrenic symtoms.
