A Study on the Differences of the Psychiatric Symptoms between the Head Trauma Patients with CNS Lesions and without CNS Lesions in MRI Findings

In order to investigate the differences o f psychiatric symptoms between the head trauma patients with CNS lesions and without CNS lesions in M R I findings, we examined 67 patients with head trauma by traffic accident, referred more than 5 months after traffic accident, for neuropsychiatric evaluation using MRI, Symptom Checklist 90-R, Multiphasic Minnesota Personality Inventory, Barratt Impulsivity Scale and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale as measurement tools. Among them 30 patients (lesion group) had significant CNS lesions in M R I findings and 37 patients (non-lesion group) had no significant CNS lesions in M R I findings. The nonlesion group tended to somatize their symptoms more than the lesion group and showed more hysterical personality trait than the lesion group. O n the other hand, the lesion group showed more schizophrenic and socially introverted personality traits and lower Intelligence Quotient than the non-lesion group. More exaggerated compensation problem related to traffic accident in the non-lesion group was described as a possible causes of elevation of somatization symptom in SCL 90-R and hysteria profile in M M P I and the effect of organic pathology in the lesion group was described as a cause o f lower Intelligence Quotient and elevation o f schizophrenia and social introversion profiles in M M P I.
