A Study of the Influence of Paternal Deprivation on the Personality Factors and Psychopathology of Young Men

  • 13

Various theories of personality and psychopathology have stated that early experiences with parents significantly influence later personality development and psychopathology. However, there has been relatively little research done investigating into this relationship, especially paternal- child relationships. The author did research on the influence o f paternal deprivation on the personality factors and psychopathology among 96 young men, who had both parents (below, the two-parents group) and 191 young men, who had only a single mother(below, the single-mother group). The subjects completed the 16 personality factor questionaire, the parental bonding instrument (PBI) and the symptom check list-90-revised(SCL-90-R). The results can be summarized as follows * 1) The single-mother group showed desurgency, high superego, group dependence, high selfcontrol and low creativity in personality factors, much more than the two-parents group. 2) The single-mother group showed lower scores in maternal care than did the two-parents group. 3) The scores in the SCL-90-R showed no significant differences between the two-parents group and the single-mother group. 4) Desurgence(F) and superego(G) were negatively correlated with maternal overprotection and guilt-proneness(O) being postively correlated with maternal care in the two-parents group. Paternal overprotection was negatively correlated with desurgence(F) and postively correlated with guilt-proneness(O), tension (Q4) and anxiety (A N X ) in the same group. 5) Boldness(H),self-control (Q3) and extroversion (EXT) were negatively correlated with maternal overprotection and guilt-proneness(O), tension (Q4) and anxiety (A N X ) were postively correlated with maternal care in the single mother group. Desui정ence(F) was postively correlated with maternal care in the same group. 6) Scales of 16PF, SCL-90-R and PBI showed no significant difference between the paternal deprivation group before the child was 6 years old and the patemal-deprivation group after the child was 6 years old. 7) Scales of 16PF showed no significant difference between the single-mother group with surrogate and the single-mother group without surrogate. The single-mother group with surrogate showed higher scores for somatization, obsessive compulsive, depression and anxiety in the SCL-90-R than did the single mother-group without surrogate. Finally, the author has concluded that the single-mother group (the patemal-deprivation group) had different personality factors, in contrast to those o f the two-parents group ; that parental bonding did influence the personality factos in the young men ; and the single-mother group with surrogate had more psychopathology than did the group without surrogate
