Factors Affecting Plasma Homovanillic Add Concentration in Healthy Subjects

This study was to determine the factors affecting plasma HVA levels in healthy subjects. The influence of factors such as sampling time, blood pressure, amount of cigarette smoking and coffee and anxiety scores on the variance o f plasma HVA levels was assessed. Samples were collected at 8 A M and 4 PM and at the same time all variables were recorded. Plasma HVA levels were measured by high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection. This study would provide a guidance about some factors affecting plasma HVA levels. The results were as following : 1) The plasma HVA levels showed dirunal variation. The 4 PM HVA levels decreased about 22% during 2 sampling interval. 2) The amount o f smoking between 2 sampling times and daily smoking amount were significantly correlated with 8 A M HVA. 3) The amount o f coffee between 2 sampling times was significantly correlated with both 8 A M HVA and 4 PM HVA. Daily coffee consumption was significantly correlated with 4 PM HVA. The results suggest that smoking and coffee should be considered as important factors affecting changes in plasma HVA level
