The Longitudinal Change of The Ego Defense Mechanism in Schizophrenic Inpatients

This study was conducted to evaluate the longitudinal change of ego defense mechanism in schizophrenic inpatients. We administrated BPRS and Ewha Defense M echanism Test 3times (within 1 week o f admission, 4 week of admission and 8 week) to patients who satisfied diagnostic criteria o f schizophrenia in DSM-III-R. The results were as follows : 1) ‘Projection’ and ‘denial，were significantly decreased during the eight week o f admission. 2) ‘Dissociation’ was significantly decreased between 4th week and 8th week o f admission. 3) ‘Suppression’ was significantly increased between 4th week and 8th week o f admission. 4) Narcissistic defense mechanism was significantly decreased during the eight week. In summary, as the clinical symptoms were improved in schizophrenics, the use of narcissistic defense mechanism was significantly decreased
