This study was designed to examine an association between age at onset and psychotic depression am ong 43 depressed patients over the age of 60 years who were admitted to the D epartm ent of Psychiatry, Kangnam St. M ary’ s Hospital, Catholic University Medical College from January 1st,1990 to December 31st, 1992. The results were as follows : 1) O f the 43 patients with DSM-III-R unipolar m ajor depression, 15 were psychotic and 28 were nonpsychotic. 2) The psychotic and nonpsychotic groups did not differ with regard to m ean土 SD index age(65.2±4.9 versus 64.4± 3.6years). However, psychotic depressives were significantly older than nonpsychotic ones at onset(60.3土 8.3 versus 53.8±8.2 years). 3) Ten of the 16 late-onset patients were psychotic, com pared to only 5 o f the 27 earlyonset patients with respect to the presence o f psychotic symptoms were significant In view of our results, it suggests that late-onset depression appears to be distinct, with respect to psychotic features.
