A Study on the Treatment Course of Chronic Schizophrenics

This study was designed to classify treatment modality o f chronic schizophrenics, and compare characteristics according to each treatment modality. The author interviewed 201 hospitalized chronic schizophrenics and their family members using semistructured questionaires. The treatment modality was statistically analyzed in relation to the demographic characteristics, symptoms, duration of illness, concept of m ental illness, familial religion. The results were as follows : 1) The treatment modality was classified into 3 types, which were a course of continuing hospital therapy, a course of alternating hospital, folk, shamanistic and religious therapy, and a course of alternating folk, shamanistic and religious therapy. 2) The course of continuing hospital therapy modality was more prevalent in high and middle economic status, large and medium-small city and in those patients with psychological concept of mental illness. 3) The course of alternating hospital, folk, shamanistic and religious therapy modality was more prevalent in high and middle economic status, large and medium-small city and in those patients with psychological concept of mental illness. 4) The course o f alternating folk, shamanistic and religious therapy modality was more prevalent in low economic status, farming and fishing area and in those patients with primitive concept of mental illness
