원삼국~삼국시대 마한·백제 권역 취락 분포의 시공간적 변화

Spatio-temporal Changes of Mahan·Baekje Settlements in the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period and the Three Kingdoms Periods : An Experimental Application of Radiocarbon Dates and GIS Spatial Analyses

백제의 확장 및 지방지배 방식에 대한 연구는 위세품 및 묘제의 변화를 중심으로 이루어졌으며, 이 과정에서 백제의 영역확대 과정과 다양한 지방지배 방식에 대한 논의가 이루어졌다. 본고에서는 기존의 연구 성과에 더해 원삼국~삼국시대 마한·백제 권역의 취락 분포의 변화를 살펴봄으로써 백제의 지역별 확장전략에 대해 검토하고자 하였다. 이를 위해서는 지역 간 비교를 가능하게 할 만한 절대적인 시간축의 설정 및 시기별 취락 규모의 추출을 기반으로 한 광역적인 공간 분석이 시도될 필요가 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 방사성탄소연대를 이용하여 AD 300년 전후의 시기별 취락 규모를 추출하고 경기·강 원, 충청, 전라의 세 지역의 지역별 취락 분포에 대한 공간 분석을 시도하였다. 또한 취락 유적의 샘플링 바이어스를 보완하기 위해 분묘 유적의 분포를 함께 비교검토하였다. 그 결과 경기·강원, 충청, 전라의 세 지역은 4세기 이전의 취락 분포에서 차이를 보였는데, 이는 각 지역의 사회·정치적 상황의 차이를 반영하고 있는 것으로 생각된다. 또한 4세기 이후 각 지역에 나타났던 취락 분포의 변화 양상 또한 다양했음이 확인되었는데, 이는 백제와 각 지역과의 관계 방식의 차이에 따라 나타난 결과라고 보았다. 이를 종합하면 원삼국 단계에 각 지역 정치체들의 다양한 사회·정치적 조건에 따라 백제가 그 지역으로 확장하고 지배해나가기 위한 전략 또한 달라졌으며, 그에 따라 각 지역에 나타났던 영향 또한 달라진 결과라고 할 수 있다.

Research investigating the processes of Baekje’s expansion and strategies of regional control has traditionally focused on distributions of prestige goods and changes of burial types. In addition to these previous studies, spatio-temporal changes in settlements in the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period and the Three Kingdoms Period are investigated in this paper in order to understand Baekje’s expansionist strategies. For this, settlement distribution changes in the Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Jeolla provinces are compared both before and after AD 300 with radiocarbon dates and GIS spatial analyses. The results of the analyses reveal that each of the three sub-regions showed different settlement patterns before and after the 4th century. Analysis of burial site distributions also supports these patterns. It is suggested that the various patterns observed in this study resulted from diverse interactions between Baekje and its peripheral polities. In other words, the differential conditions of each regional polity prompted different reactions to Baekje expansion, and in turn, Baekje strategies of control for each regional polity also varied.
