본고에서는 중부, 호서, 전북지역의 원삼국시대에서 삼국시대의 토기편년안을 탄소연대를 통해 검증한다. 현재 많이 이용되는 이 지역의 토기편년안은 토기질과 소성강도의 발전에 따라 시간적 순서를 부여하는 기술진보론적인 전제와 표지유물을 통해 단계를 설정하고 전역에 확대 적용하는 방법에 의거하고 있는데, 아직 독립적인 방법을 통해 검증된 바 없다. 이에, 현재의 편년안에서 선후관계를 갖고 있다고 설정된 토기들이 실제로 탄소연대분포에서도 차이를 보이는지를 검증한다. 이를 위해, 중부, 호서, 전북지역에서 보고된 총 2,001건의 탄소연대 중 조정과 조합을 거친 845건의 연대측정치의 연대분포를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, (1) 경질무문토기와 타날문토기는 등장시점에 차이가 없다는 점, (2) 경질무문토기 단순기는 존재하지 않는다는 점, (3) 인구공백지대로 표현되는 지역에 인구공백이 실재하지 않았다는 점, (4) 승문타날토기와 격자문타날토기 간에 시차가 없다는 점, (5) 한성백제기 연질토기와 경질토기는 서로 대체되는 것이 아니라 장기간 공존하였다는 점 등이 밝혀졌다. 이러한 양상은 현재의 편년에 중대한 문제가 있다는 점을 보여 준다. 이에, 본고에서는 서로 다른 질의 토기가 장기간 공존하는지를 설명하기 위해, 원삼국시대와 국가형성기에 현저하게 진척된 사회복합화 및 위계화 및 사회경제적 차별화를 토기의 가격분화와 연결하여 검토한다.
This paper tests the current pottery chronology of the Korean Proto-Three Kingdoms and Three Kingdoms Periods, focusing on the central, Hoseo, and Jeonbuk areas. Based on technological progressivism, the current chronology presumes the qualities of pottery as index fossils that can divide sub-periods, but this approach has not been rigorously tested. We investigate radiocarbon dates from houses to test whether these index types could be temporally arranged. In testing the current chronology, we analyze 845 controlled dates out of a total of 2001 dates reported as of 2014. Results show that (1) ‘Hard Plain Pottery’ and ‘Paddled Pottery’ appeared almost simultaneously, (2) what is currently defined as ‘Hard Plain Pottery Period’ did not exist, (3) there were no unoccupied areas in the period under study, (4) there was no difference in time between different paddling techniques, and (5) ‘Hard Reduced Pottery’ did not replace ‘Soft Reduced Pottery’. These results do not support the current pottery chronology. To explain the long coexistence of different pottery types, we discuss the relationships between socioeconomic differentiation in the process of state formation and the diversification of pottery prices.
