The treatment methods prior to psychiatric admission in Bugok National Mental Hospital were studied using semistructured questionaires from May 17,1993 to Jul. 16,1993 about 256 males and 132 females. The treatment methods were divided into 3 groups • shamanistic, folk and religious therapy. The treatment methods were statistically analyzed in relation to the following factors : residence, marital status, education, occupation, economic status, religious background, diagnosis, duration of illness, times of hospitalization, therapeutic response. The results were as follows: 1) More than half of patients had treated with shamanistic, folk and religous therapy. 2) Religious therapy were performed most often in large city area group. 3) The lower the patients’ economic status, the more the patients were treated with shamanistic therapy. 4) Acoording to the religious background shamanism, Buddism and Confucianism group consulted shamanistic, folk therapy, while Protestant Catholic and other groups consulted religious therapy. 5) After shamanistic, folk and religious therapy, direct emotional response were various on individual basis and nearly half of patients had negative view on the shamanistic, folk and religious therapy
