Anxiety and Depression of Female Elementary School Teachers

This article describes a cross-sectional study of the possible links between job-related stress and anxiety and depressive symptoms of 128 female elementary school teachers in Kyunggi. province, Korea. The authors administered Beck’s Depression Inventory and Zung’s Self-Rating Anxiety Scale and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory to teacher group. As compared with the age-sex-education matched control(n=119), the results were as follows : 1) The teacher group showed higher Self-Rating Anxiety Scale than the control but did not differ from the control in the total Beck’s Depression Inventory score. 2) In factor analysis of Beck’s Depression Inventory, teacher group showed significantly higher scores than the control in the somatic symptom subscale and the self-effacement, guilt, self-hatred subscale. There was no significant difference between the two groups in the dissatis faction on everday life and interpersonal relationship subscale whereas, the control group showed significantly higher scores than teacher group in the pessimistic trait subscale. 3) The teacher group responded in a defensive fashion against Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, which suggest the good social skills and ego functioning of the teacher group, like as a defensive fashion in well educated individuals. The above findings suggest indirectly that the teacher group are more anxious and are preoccupied with their somatic symptoms and show self-dissatisfaction which may be originated from job-related activities.
