This study was designed to examine clinical variables of patients transferee! from general medical setting to psychiatric unit from February 1st, 1987 to December, 31 st, 1992 at Kangnam St Mary’s Hospital, Catholic University Medical College. As a comparison group the study cohort was age and sex matched, with patients seen on the consultation service who were not transferred. The results were as follows: 1) There were no significant differences in age, sex and marital status between transferred group and nontransferred group. 2) At the time of initial consultation, the mean GAS score for the transferred group was significantly lower than that of the comparison group. At the time of discharge from the hospital, however, the difference between the two groups had disappeared, the transferred group had a significantly greater improvement in m ean GAS score(P<0.00l). 3) There was no significant difference in the mean SIRS-R ratings between the two groups. 4) As for the transfer or consultation reasons, the transferred group was significantly more likely to have depression(p<0.01) or to have suididal ideation(P<0.0l). However, the transferred group was significantly less likely to have anxiety(P〈0.001) or sleep difficulty(P〈.05). 5) 78.75% of the transferred and 37.5 % of the comparison group were diagnosed as mood disorder as their primary diangosis. This difference was statistically signiflcant(P〈0.001). 6) The majority of the transferred and comparison group were transferred or consulted from the department of internal medicine. 7) 22.5% of the transferred group and 7.5% of the comparison group had a history of prior psychiatric illness. The difference was statistically significant(P<0.01). 8) 70% of the trasferred and 45% of the comparison group were treated with psychotropic medication in the medical/surgical settings, the difference was statistically significant(p<0.01).
