This study was designed to determine the differences of ego defence mechanisms between the patient with cancer and control group. Total numbers o f cancer patients were sixty-seven and were divided into 5 subgroups, such as Gastvointertind(ll)，Pulmonary (ll), Genitourinary and Gynecology(26), Hematology(7)，and Others(12). Korean defence mechanism test was performed and based on the traditional proverbs. The results were as follows: 1) Comparing the defences of the cancer group with those of the control group, we found that the patient group used more defences of anticipation(p<C05) and rationalization(p<C.01) than the control group. 2) Among 5 subgroups, there were relatively differences in defence mechanisms, such as show-off, passive-aggressive behavior, denial, anticipation, and regression. In post-hoc comparison, however, there was no correlation between distibution of cancers and specific defence mechanism and it requires futher follow-up study
