The authors used the Suicidal Opinion Questionnaire developed by Domino and then investigated the attitude toward suicide of 71 schizophrenics, 49 their family members and 44 normal subjects. 1) All of the three groups thought that suicide is abnormal behavior which should be prevented, and suicide attempters are lonely and depressed and should undertake treatment to understand their inner motivation. They saw suicide as a very serious moral transgression and a behavior against the laws of God and/or nature. They did not believe that suicide occurs only in civilized societies and most suicide victims are older persons. 2) Many of schizophrenics thought that relatives of a suicide victim had no idea of what was about to happen. 3) Many of family members of schizophrenics thought that suicide is an evil act not to be forgiven, and would feel ashamed if a member of their family committed suicide ; Nevertheless, they are generous to people who died by suicide. 4) We extracted 9 factors after factor analysis : mental illness, acceptability, seriousness, religion, justification, risk, normality, culture and attention, family support. 5) After comparing total factor scores of schizophrenics, their family and normal subjects, we came up with significant difference in three factors such as acceptability, justification and risk.
