The authors made a study on the effects of haloperidol on the immune function. The subjects were seventeen schizophrenics and one schizophreniform disorder patient, admitted at psychiatric ward, Kyungpook National University Hospital. They had no history of taking any medication at least for two months prior to their admission and no potential diseases which can have influence on immune functions. The immunological tests were conducted prior to and on the sixtieth day following the administration of haloperidol. The method used was a direct immunofluorescence technique with the use of monoclonal antibodies. The items tested were : lymphocyte, monocyte, granulocyte differential counts %,total T cells %, T4 cells %,T8 cells % , T4 /T8 ratio, NK cells (natural killer cells) % and total B cells %. The results showed no statistically significant differences in all variables of the immunological tests before and on the sixtieth day of the administration of haloperidol(P〉0.05). Consequently, the authors found no specific influences of haloperidol on the immune function of schizophrenic patients at therapeutic dosage.
