The author assessed 890 hospitalized patients during a period of more than a year in Yong- In Mental hospital and found that 142 patients (16.0%) had physically attacked other persons or inanimate objects in the hospital at least once. Alm ost all incidents were petty and none led to lasting injuries. The violent behaviors mainly occured within one week of hospitalization and fellow patients were by far the commonest victims. Com pared with the non-violoent inpatients, offending patients were more likely to be single, to be less than 30 years old, to have a history of violence before admission, to have longer hospitalization period, and to have a diagnosis of affective disorder. And there was sex differences between clinical variables and violent behaviors
