Clinical Features and Polysomnographic Findings of Sleep Apnea Syndrome

For the purpose of identifying the clinical features and sleep pattern of the sleep apnea syndrome and to investigate the polysomnographic findings according to excessive daytime sleepiness, the authors performed overnight polysomnography to 24 subjects who com plained of snoring and apneic episodes during sleep. The results were as follows: 1) All 24 subjects were snorer and sleep apnea was observed by bedpartners in 22 of 24 subjects(91.7%). Sixteen of 24 subjects(66.7%) complained excessive daytime sleepiness and 10(41.7%) complained the excessive daytime sleepiness. 2) The average total sleep time was 343.7 (±73.6) minutes and the average sleep efficiency was 84.7(±7.6)%. The average total apnea num ber was 226.3(土 160.2) and the average apnea index was 40.3(±26.9). The average lowest arterial oxygen saturation was 75.5(±9.1)%. 3) The fractions of each sleep stage to total sleep time were 29.0% (stage 1), 43.1 % (stage 2), 11.7% (stage 3),4.0% (stage 4) and 12.2% ( REM stage) respectively. Compared with norm al adult sleep, stage 1 increased, stage 3, stage 4 and R E M stage decreased and stage 2 had no difference. 4) The lowest arterial oxygen saturation, the total apnea number, and the apnea index of the subjects with more severe excessive daytime sleepiness were 69.2%, 339.7,and 60.7 respectively and these were significantly different from those of the subjects with less severe excessive daytime sleepiness(P<O.01).
