A Preliminary Study for the Development of a Defense Style Questionnaire Adapted for Koreans

This study was performed to examine the factorial structure of defense mechanism in the healthy korean population and to clarify its characteristics by means of Bond ’ s Defensive style Questionnair. The subject of the study were 144 college students and 116 adults. Eysenk Personality Qiestionaire was also adiminstered to the subject for further exploration of defensive style in association with personality dimension. A four factor solution was obtained and the results were as follows : 1) Factor I was similar to the immature defense style classified by Vaillant but not equal to it composed of negative self image, unstable social attitude and sensitive emotional response. 2) Factor II was almost equal to immature defense style classified by Vailliant composed of social maladjustment by impulsive an d ego-centric behavior with persecutory and hostile interpersonal relationship. 3) Factor III composed of demonstration of one’ s superiority, energetic social activity, instability by fluctuation of mood, and ability to take risks. 4) Factor IV composed of a tendency to adapt to reality, suppression of emotional expression, and passive social attitude. In conclusion, there are similarity and difference between the results of this study and original description. Further study is indicated to understand cultural implication and to evaluate general applicability of the questionnaire.
