Brain Computed Tomographic Findings in Autistic Children

  • 3

The purpose of this study was to examine brain structural abnormalities in autistic children. The authors investigated C.T findings in 37 autistic children diagnosed by D.S.M-III-R, and measured the first and second cerebroventricular ratio, right and left Evan’s ratio in 37 autistic children and 30 non-autistic control children. Seven of 37 autistic children had abnormal CT findings, these abnormalities were asymmetry of lateral ventricle in 3 autistic children, carvum septum pellucidum in 1, effacement of cerebral sulci, obliteration of lateral cistern in 1, obliteration of left ambient cistern in 1,and megacistema magna, arachnoid cyst in 1. In the comparison of first and second cerebroventricular ratio between autistic children and non-autistic patient control children, there was no significant difference. There was no significant difference between autistic children and non-autistic control children in the right and left Evan’s ratio. The frequencies of autistic symptoms were compaired between autistic children with and without CT abnormalties, and abnormal language and no comfortseeking behavior were significantly frequent in autistic children with CT abnormalties.
