From ‘Dwellings’ to ‘Residents’-A Proposition for Household Archaeology in Korean Prehistory

고고학연구에서 住居資料의 중요성은 달리 강조할 필요가 없을 것이다. 한국고고학에서도 주거자료는 편년, 지역성과 문화적 계통성의 파악 등 몇 가지 중요한 문제 규명에 활용되고 있다. 그러나 현재 그러한 연구는 질적 성장이나 양적 확장이 어려운 상태에 놓여 있다. 더구나 일부 새로운 시도들도 방법론의 불비나 적절한 연구주제의 창출 미비로 성장의 동력이 미약하다. 본고는 그러한 문제의 돌파구로, 구미 고고학계에서 지난 30여 년간 비약적인 성장이 목격된 가구고고학적 접근을 주목한다. 개괄적이나마 성장의 배경과 중요하게 다루어져왔던 분야 및 초점을 살펴보면, 가구고고학은 일관된 독자적 이론체계를 구비한 새로운 사조는 아니지만 ‘家口’라는 보편적 基層單位에 대한 다각적 접근을 통해 인류의 중요한 변화들을 훨씬 더 역동적으로 이해할 수 있는 통로를 엶으로써 연구영역과 주제를 확장시키고 있음을 알 수 있다. 물론, 서구에서 발원한 접근방식에 맞춰가는 것이 우리 고고학의 발전을 담보하는 것은 아니지만 연구주제의 고갈과 새로운 주제의 모색이 절실한 상황에서 그러한 작업이 현실적 대안으로 나쁘지만은 않을 듯하다.

It seems, in general, not necessary to exaggerate the importance of the role of dwelling data in archaeological research. In Korean archaeology, dwelling data has been used to establish chronological schemes, and to identify spatial variation and cultural traditions. However, recently it has become unlikely for research of this kind to generate new meaningful arguments. Some attempts newly introduced into Korean prehistoric dwelling studies do not seem to have had progressive momentum due to the lack of proper methodology or research themes. This paper, in order to breach the current problems faced by Korean prehistoric dwelling studies, focuses on household archaeology, which has grown dramatically in Western archaeology. A brief review of its development and research topics makes it clear that although household archaeology is not a paradigm with unique theoretical constructs, it is able to produce a myriad of research topics by looking at household-level patterns. I am not, of course, trying to suggest that a mere adoption of approaches originating from Western archaeology can contribute to the progression of approaches in a Korean context. Nevertheless, it can be regarded as a plausible alternative way to address the real-world problems faced by Korean archaeology which is desperate to find new and productive research themes.
