The Structure and Construction Process of the Silla Wooden Chamber Tomb with Stone Mound

삼국시대 신라의 도읍인 경주의 특징적 묘제로 적석목곽묘는 널리 알려져 왔다. 기원과 계통, 개념과 범주, 발생과 전개 등 다양한 주제로 연구가 진행되어 왔지만 현재로선 연구자간 개념설정과 범주에 관한 인식차이가 매우 큰 상황이다. 그리고 이러한 인식차이는 삼국시대 영남지방 전체의 고분문화를 이해하는 데 그대로 적용되어 하나의 유구에 대해 전혀 다른 평가를 내리는 경우도 발생하고 있다. 본고는 이러한 인식차이가 결국, 상세한 구조분석과 축조공정의 복원 등 기초연구의 부족에 있음을 지적하고, 적석목곽묘 축조의 중심지인 경주분지 내 중심고분군의 자료를 적극적으로 재검토하였다. 이를 위해, 적석목곽묘의 구조와 관련된 다양한 속성들을 상세히 분석하고 전체를 4가지 유형(A~D류)으로 분류하였다. 그리고 다시 각 유형별로 세부구조와 축조공정을 면밀히 검토한 결과, 각 유형은 규모에 따른 구조적 차이만 존재할 뿐 그 축조공정과 축조원리 등이 완전히 일치하고 있음을 확인하였다. 적석목곽묘는 전체 3단계와 세부적으로 9가지 공정을 통해 완성된다. 특히, 1차 봉토와 호석은 목곽 설치 이전에 마련되는 것으로 축조공정상의 가장 중요한 특징이 된다. 이와 함께 상부적석과 밀봉점토, 원형봉토 등을 적석목곽묘의 가장 중요한 구성요소로 보았다. 지상화된 목곽, 견고한 호석과 함께 쌓는 1차 봉토, 목곽주위(四周・上部)의 적석, 두터운 바닥시설(屍床) 등으로 요약되는 적석목곽묘의 구조역학적 특징들은 모두 무덤의 지상화와 고총화를 위한 구조적 고안이다. 결국, 적석목곽묘는 고총을 지향했던 신라(경주)지배층 내부의 열망과 의지가 그대로 표출된 특별한 구조의 목곽묘였음을 확인하였다. 나아가 적석목곽묘가 영남 각지에 고총이 축조되는 시발점 역할을 하는 것으로 그 축조의 의미를 찾을 수 있었다.

The wooden chamber tomb with stone mound has been identified, through excavation, as the typical tomb type of the Gyeongju area since the Japanese colonial period. As the name of the tomb indicates, it is a burial structure consisting of a wooden chamber, into which the deceased and grave goods were buried, that was covered with a circular stone cairn. The use of stone cairns, which appeared in the Gyeongju area, became a typical feature of the tombs of the Youngnam region. The high and enormous mound which contained this inner stone structure is the characteristic feature of the wooden chamber tomb with stone mound. Tombs that were built on the flat plains of the wide Gyeongju basin were able to express the identity of the deceased through their position within the landscape and their method of construction. The cultural originality and diversity demonstrated by these tombs, as well as the various artifacts (including the gorgeous metal accessories) found within, have been a focus of research.
