The Transformation of Early Soft Grayish Pottery in the Gyeongbuk Region and its Regional Variation

이 글에서는 경북 지역 전기 와질토기의 변천 과정을 분기별로 나누고, 각 분기별 지역 간 특성을 살핌으로써 그것이 가지는 의미를 설명하였다. 분석 결과, 전기 와질토기의 변천과정은 기종별 동반에 따라 8개의 분기로 나뉜다. I기는 기원전 1세기 전엽, II기는 기원전 1세기 중엽, III기는 기원전 1세기 후엽, IV기는 기원 1세기 전엽, V기는 기원 1세기 중엽, VI기는 기원 1세기 후엽, VII기는 기원 2세기 전엽, VIII기는 기원 2세기 중엽으로 비정하였다. 경북 지역의 주머니호와 조합우각형파수부호, 단경호는 형태에서 지역 간 특징을 공유하지만, 동시기 전기 와질토기는 지역에 따라 특징적인 형태가 있거나, 지역마다 형태의 세부적인 차이가 있어서 전기 와질토기는 공통양식 내에서 지역에 따라서 다소간 다르다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 지역 간 이러한 세부적인 차이를 토기의 제작과 분배와 관련을 갖는 것으로 해석하였다. 경주 지역에 국한시켜 토기의 제작과 분배를 살펴 볼 때 조양동, 황성동, 사라리, 인동리 등 각 洞과 里단위로 토기가 제작된 것으로 보인다. 이로부터 전기 와질토기 단계에서는 소지역 단위로 토기의 제작과 분배가 이루어졌을 것으로 상정하였다. 따라서 전기 와질토기의 전체적인 변화에서 관찰되는 공통점은 단위 지역 간 정보망이나 공통된 범형의 존재를 시사하지만, 지역의 세부적인 차이는 각 지역별로 어느 정도 독립적이었음을 보여주는 것으로 해석하였다.

This study divided the transformation of early soft grayish (Wajil) pottery in the Gyeongbuk region into stages, and analyzed the regional variation of each stage in order to figure out its significance. Based on the results of the analysis, the transformation of early soft grayish pottery was divided into 8 stages according to vessel types. Stage I can be attributed to the early 1st century BC, Stage II to the middle of the 1st century BC, Stage III to the later 1st century BC, Stage IV to the early 1st century AD, Stage V to the middle of the 1st century AD, Stage VI to the later 1st century AD, Stage VII to the early 2nd century AD and Stage VIII the middle of the 2nd century AD. During each stage, the pocket-shaped jar, jar with horn-shaped handles, and jar experienced independent developments per region, and there existed specific regional differences according to region. Such regional differences may be interpreted as having been derived from the nature of pottery production and distribution which was based on the structure of that of the Samhan (Three Han) Period. In the region restricted to the Gyeongju area, pottery production and distribution are assumed to have taken place at the level of the ‘dong’ or ‘ri’ of the present day, at sites such as Joyang-dong, Hwangseong-dong, Sara-ri and Indong-ri. Accordingly, the common aspects of the overall transformation of early soft grayish pottery may be taken to suggest the existence of a regional network or common legend. However, the regional differences observed in this study can also be seen to demonstrate the presence of a certain degree of uniqueness, as well, at the regional level.
