Psychiatric Consultation at Chosun University Hospital

We reviewed the medical records of 177 inpatients who were referred for psychiatric consultation from January 1. 1991 to December 31. 1991 at Chosun University Hospital. The results as were follows : 1) 1.41% of all inpatients were referred for psychiatric consultation. There were more men than women. Most of the patients were in their 30’s. 14.7% were over 60 years of age. 2) Department of internal medicine referred patients for psychiatric consultation most frequently (49.2%). 3) Most of the patients were referred during the month of May, followed by march and April. 4) The most common reason for psychiatric consultation was physical symptoms which showed no laboratory abnormalities (23.2 %). 5) Organic mental disorder was the most common psychiatry diagnosis by consultants after evaluation. 6) Consulting psychiatrists recommended psychotropic medication and psychological management most frequently. 7) In 14.7% transfer to psychiatric ward was recommended and 76.9% among these were actually transferred.
