자살기도자의 사회환경적 고찰

SOCIO -ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AMONG ATTEMPTED SUICIDES

This study was designed to investigate the attempted suicide cases from the view points of social and environmental factors thought to be contributing to the problems of suicide. The subjects were -those who attempted to commit suicide and were Brought to the Suicide Prevention Center, Affiliated Catholic Medical Center from the period of September 1,1965. to august 31, 1966. The number of the subjects studied was 493 cases, including 193 male and 300 female, out of total number of 969 patients in the period. The subjects represent the number which were thought to have met sufficiently the designed criterion for this particular study in terms of cooperation, length of stay in the hospital and degree of reliability and so on. The subjects selected were interiewed by the authors by means of general psychiatric interview technique along with questionaire cards that have already been prepared for the purpose. The results may be summarized as follows 1. Age distribution revealed to be heavily concentr ated between the age of 15 and 25(322 cases, 37.4% ) There was a sharp decrease in the prevalence of attempted suicide as age advanced. 2. Sibling order: First child 139 cases (28.2% ) Last child 59 cases (12.0% ) Only child 46 cases (9 .3% ) There is no singnificant difference between sexes. 3. There is no significant difference in terms of educational back ground except that more illiterates among the female group (14. 0% ) were found than that of the male group (4.1% ). There were more college graduates among males (16.6% ) than females (8.7% ). But this differences were noted to bear little significances when compared to the census on the general population in the City of Seoul. 4. Occupational status revealed that there were 113 unemployed (22. 9% ), 54 employed (11.0% ), and 48 students (9 .1% ) among the attempted suicides. 5. Socio-economic status: Upper class 24 cases (4. 9% ) Middle class 178 cases (3 6 .1% ) Lower class 284 cases (57.7% ) 6. Marital status revealed that 304 cases (61. 7% ) of them were recordedas single or unmarried. 7. Religious status revealed that 82.1% of the cases claimed to have affiliated with no religions where as only 17.9% are Affiliated to various religions. The figure also bears no particular difference when compared to the proportion of religions affiliation survey to general population in the city of Seoul. 8. Occupational status among the parents of the young, unemployed attempted suicidal cases including student group revealed that most of them were confirmed to be fairly stable if not deceased during early childhood of the cases. 9. It was found that 66.4% of the attempted suici des noted to have lost either one or both parents before the age of 15.
